Hello all,
After a beautiful morning surveying at the Naval Academy Dairy Farm (more on that later, I hear), my girlfriend and I took a walk around Greenbury Pt. in Annapolis. It was slower than previous visits but we still saw good numbers and diversity of sparrows and other birds including ~ 60 White-throated, ~ 50 Song, 6 Field, 2 Swamp, 2 Savannah, and 1 Lincoln's Sparrow. This is the first Lincoln's Sparrow I've seen in winter in the Mid-Atlantic area. It was distinctly smaller than Song Sparrow with a smaller bill, white-eye ring, broad gray supercilium and nape and fine streaking limited to the flanks and upper breast. There was a very small spot on the upper breast. The bird was seen on the west side of W Rd between the first and second tower in an area that had a lot of tangled grape vines. There was a large flock of sparrows feeding on the side of the road (White-throated, Song, and Swamp) when the Lincoln's appeared perched on top of a tangle of vines about 4 - 5 feet of the ground.
Also seen was 1 Hermit Thrush, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 2 E. Bluebirds, 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers, many Cardinals, Mockers, Red-bellieds, Downies, C. Chickadees, etc.
The Bay was relatively quiet but there were ~ 40 Bufflehead, 2 Hooded Mergansers, 17 Ruddy Ducks, 1 Pied-billed Grebe and 2 Mute Swans along with small numbers of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls.
Good Birding,
