I finally located the Shrike at Chino Farms this morning after about a half a dozen unsuccessful attempts. He was in the row of trees/shrubs on the north side of Roundtop Rd. just east of Kibler Rd. When I first saw him he was chowing down on what appeared to be the impaled carcass of a female cardinal. I watched him for a good hour, alternately feeding on his kill, then moving to an open area of the trees to sit in the sun. I got great looks at him through my scope in perfect light, pretty much point blank for extended periods of time. You can see a few photos at this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/27381338@N03/4298735363/in/photostream/ . I don't know anything about this bird's history, but I did notice he was banded and you can see this in a couple of the shots.
