This was the dullest day I have ever had doing this three-mile stretch of the canal, Milepost 104-107. Probably the good weather was to blame for the lack of waterfowl. This is the first time the river has been completely free of ice here. Land birds were scarce and species diversity and numbers the poorest I have experienced in the years of covering this section, missing species such as Sapsucker, Blue Jay, Bluebird, Towhee, White-throat, Junco, House Finch, and with only one each of Robin, Starling, Waxwing, and Song Sparrow. But there is always a highlight for the day and it was two Phoebes this year.
