Phil and Tyler:

Would one of you be good enough to post the following note to MDOsprey for me?

Thanks

Lapland Longspur in Frederick Co.

One of my favorite birding trips after a snow storm is to bird the Oland Road area of Frederick County in search of Lapland Longspurs and other open country bird, which I did today, January 31, 2010, from 4:15 to 5:20pm.  I would guess that there was 3-5 inches of snow in this area, almost all fields were covered with snow.  Only the roads and a few small patches in the fields (blown bare by the wind) were clear of snow.

I covered Buckeystown Rd (Rt.85), Oland Road (twice) and New Design Road (twice).

Along the side of New Design Road I found a flock of about 18-20 Horned Larks; and single Savannah Sparrow.  Covering Oland Road a second time I observed feeding along the side of the road 14 Horned Lark, and one Lapland Longspur.  The Longspur spent sometime on the pavement providing an unobstructed view.

There was NO manure spread in the fields today, perhaps because the snow ended late on Saturday and today is Sunday.  This is in the same area where Lapland Longspurs were reported on MDOsprey on January 11 (3 birds) and on January 14 (one bird).
