Hi all,
This is actually my first time posting. About six months ago I moved from
the Mt. Washington neighborhood of Baltimore City to a significantly less
birdy rowhouse community near the site of the old stadium. In my tiny
back yard, I have a single crabapple tree, a small weeping cherry, and not
much else. Suffice it to say, my yard list has been growing incrementally.
I thought the blizzard(s) might turn up some new birds for the list, and I
was right.
A short while ago, I looked out the window at the feeders (mounted on the
deck), and saw a single Song Sparrow in the middle of the feeder tray, flaring
its wings and aggressively charging the various members of a rather
nonplussed gang of House Sparrows. After a valiant effort, it flew into the
crabapple tree. A couple of minutes later, a White-throated Sparrow (another
new yard bird!) popped into view. The Song Sparrow reappeared a few
minutes ago, and fed undisturbed.
Other blizzard birds at the feeder: Northern Cardinals (male & female), a pair
of American Goldfinches (not seen in the yard since mid-fall), many Mourning
Doves, and the local Northern Mockingbird, who has done his very best to
micro-manage the whole operation.
Good birding!
