I went to see the Varied Thrush in central Fairfax County this
afternoon. It is a beautiful adult male, with striking coloring and
markings. It was a Life Bird for me! I arrived a the home where it is
being seen about 1:50; at about 2:05 the bird appeared directly in
front of us in a holly tree, with a full front and then a full back
view. It then flew to another holly and gave another full front and a
super side view; it then flew down to the ground for more excellent
views. It then flew off and we lost sight of it. The bird has been
seen every day since about Feb. 3 or 4. Today, it was seen about
10:50, about 12:45, and I saw it at 2:05. I waited until 4:15 hoping
for a second view, but it did not reappear. The bird is being seen at
the feeders in a residential backyard in central Fairfax County, about
3 miles from the intersection of I-66 and RT-50, west. For
information, permission to view, and directions you may call 703-
264-8860. Please call at reasonable hours.
