This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, February 23, at
3:30 PM.

Top birds this week are PAINTED BUNTING in MD and VA and VARIED
THRUSH* and WESTERN TANAGER* in VA.

Other birds of interest include geese, ducks, EARED GREBE, AMERICAN
WHITE PELICAN, GREAT CORMORANT, hawks, WILSON'S SNIPE, AMERICAN
WOODCOCK, gulls, hummingbird, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, sparrows, SNOW
BUNTING and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

A VARIED THRUSH*, well-seen and well-photographed, continues to be
seen at a backyard feeder in Herndon, Fairfax Co, VA with reports
during the week.

A WESTERN TANAGER* continues to visit a feeder in Williamsburg, VA
with a sighting on February 20.
 
A male PAINTED BUNTING returned to a feeder in Bowie, Prince Georges
Co, MD on February 20 and has been seen during the week. The hosts
request that birders contact them by e-mail for directions and a
viewing time (to ease parking problems). Please see the MDOSPREY list
server for more information. 

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen on Dublin Rd, Somerset Co, MD
on February 21 and 22. A ROSS'S GOOSE was found south of Princess
Anne, Somerset Co, MD, seen on February 18, 19 and 20. Another ROSS'S
GOOSE was seen on Kiddsville Road, Augusta Co, VA on February 20. 2000
SNOW GEESE plus one ROSS'S GOOSE were found at the sharp bend in
Kinder Road, southern Caroline Co, MD on February 21.

A female EURASIAN WIGEON was re-found at the Bayside Development Pond,
Worcester Co, MD on February 19 and again on February 20. Twenty
CANVASBACK were at the West Ocean City Pond also on February 19. The
number of CANVASBACKS had increased to forty-fifty by February 21. A
large flock (over 1000) of REDHEADS was seen at Hooper's Island,
Dorchester Co, MD on February 19. One hundred ten REDHEAD were in a
pond in the Belmont on York subdivision off Highway 134, east of
Bethel Road, Hampton, VA on February 21. 
 
A large flock of 66 COMMON EIDERS and two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen at
the Ocean City inlet, Worcester Co, MD on February 19. Two
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen at Chrisfield, Somerset Co, MD also on
February 19. All three SCOTERS (SURF, WHITE-WINGED and BLACK) were
seen on Islands of the CBBT, Northampton Co, VA on February 20. A
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen from Hemingway's Restaurant, Worcester
Co, MD on February 22. A flock of fifty RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were
east of the fishing pier at Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA on
February 20.

An EARED GREBE was noted at Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co, DE on
February 21.

Seven AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester
Co, MD on February 22.

Three GREAT CORMORANTS were seen at Pt. Lookout SP, St. Mary's Co, MD
on February 20. Nineteen GREAT CORMORANTS were spotted from the CBBT
Island 3, also on February 20.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continues along Hall School Road, usually between
Lipscomb and Shalom Roads, Augusta Co, VA with sightings on February
20 and 21. A light-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Greenfield Park in
Daleville, Botetourt Co, VA on February 21. A probable ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK flew by at the Oaks Landfill in Blue Mash Nature Trail,
Montgomery Co, MD on February 22. A likely "KRIDER'S" subspecies of
the RED-TAILED HAWK was reported from Blackwater NWR on February 21. A
sub-adult GOLDEN EAGLE was seen flying over Pentridge Rd in Kent Co,
MD on February 21.

Two WILSON'S SNIPE were spotted at Veteran's Park, Prince William Co,
VA on February 17. Another WILSON'S SNIPE was on the ice at
Schoolhouse Pond, Prince George's Co, MD on February 19. Two more
WILSON'S SNIPE were seen at Deal Island, Somerset Co, MD on February
19. A WILSON'S SNIPE was noted at the Bayside Development Pond,
Worcester Co, MD on February 21. AMERICAN WOODCOCK were heard peenting
in eastern Buckingham Co, VA on February 23.

An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen again near the Little Creek Inlet
in Norfolk, VA on February 17, 20, and 21. An ICELAND GULL was at the
Salisbury Landfill, Wicomico Co, MD on February 20. Another ICELAND
GULL was seen at Jug Bay, Prince Georges Co, MD on February 23.

A Selasphorus Hummingbird (possibly Rufous) has been visiting a feeder
in Richmond, VA with a sighting on February 17 and 19.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER came to a feeder in Dentsville, Charles Co, MD
on February 18, 19 and 20. The woodpecker had a narrow escape from a
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK on February 20.

AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were widely reported in yards and at feeders
across the region. Among publicly accessible spots were feeders,
parking lots and road edges in Chesterfield, Chesterfield Co, VA,
Eastport and Kinder Farm Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD, Shorter's Wharf
Road, Dorchester Co, MD, and Castaways, Rum Point Golf Course and
Assateague Island, Bayside, Worcester Co, MD.

At least two WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were at the Blackwater NWR on
February 19. Two WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were at Chesapeake Farms, Kent
Co, MD, on HQ road.

SNOW BUNTINGS were spotted at Pt. Lookout SP, St. Mary's Co, MD on
February 18, 20 and 22. Thirty SNOW BUNTINGS were at The Point in Cape
Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE on February 21. A SNOW BUNTING was in the
front yard of a house on Coulbourne Creek Road, Somerset Co, MD on
February 22.

Four RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were on Hickory Point Road, Worcester Co, MD on
February 20. A single RUSTY BLACKBIRD showed up at a feeder in Silver
Spring, Montgomery Co, MD on February 21. Fifteen RUSTY BLACKBIRDS
were seen around Lawson's Creek WMA, Halifax Co, VA on February 21.
Around twenty RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen in Bull Run Regional Park,
Fairfax Co, VA on February 22.
