Hello all,
Not a whole lot to report, although it was great going for a walk about Greenbury Pt. in the spring like temps. The snow was gone from the road and only an inch or two deep in the woods. Of note were: 1 Gray Catbird, 6 E. Bluebirds, 1 Hermit Thrush, 1 calling Red-shouldered Hawk, 1 Kingfisher, ~ 400 Surf Scoters, with only a couple of Black Scoters, 6 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Hooded Mergansers, ~ 60 Bufflehead, and ~ 20 Common Goldeneye. Buffleheads were quite active, chasing each other, vocalizing, etc. At one point about 10 of them flew within 30 feet of where I was standing on the water's edge. Maybe the closest I ever been to a Buffle before. This is also the first time I've seen Greenbury almost completely devoid of sparrows. It was weird.
Thomas Point provided great looks at ~ 80 Greater Scaup, very close to the end of the point. The light was fantastic and I could easily see the greenish gloss to the heads, which often just looks dark on distant or poorly lit birds. Also present were ~ 6 Lesser Scaup, 2 Common Goldeneye, ~ 250 Canvasback (pretty distant flock, didn't really scour these, but nothing else stood out), 2 Black Ducks, ~ 20 Tundra Swans, ~ 120 Bufflehead, a few more Surf Scoters and ~ 40 distant Long-tailed Ducks.
Good Birding,
