This afternoon (2/27) I saw some interesting birds between Emmitsburg and Taneytown. Along the southern end of Shriver Road (Frederick County) off Bollinger School Road near a sharp curve was a flock of White-crowned Sparrows. In a nearby field of corn stubble was a variety of birds: three Killdeer, robins, Mourning Doves, four Savannah Sparrows, seven Horned Larks, and one bright Eastern Meadowlark. Near the north end of Shriver road along Harney Road by two houses was a Tree Sparrow with a flock of juncos (caution: Harney Road carries high speed traffic). There was one adult Red-headed Woodpecker in a small woodlot along Ruggles Road (Carroll County) about 1 mile west of Route 194.
