This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, March 2, at 7:00 AM.

Top birds this week are PAINTED BUNTING in MD and VA and VARIED
THRUSH* and WESTERN TANAGER* in VA.

Other birds of interest include GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, ROSS'S GOOSE,
ducks, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, BROWN PELICAN,  PEREGRINE FALCON, SANDHILL
CRANE, LAUGHING GULL, BLACK-HEADED GULL, RAZORBILL, SNOWY OWL, SHORT-EARED
OWL, a hummingbird, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, TREE SWALLOW, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW,
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and SNOW BUNTING.

A VARIED THRUSH* continues to be seen at a backyard feeder in Herndon,
Fairfax Co, VA with reports throughout the week. The owner has indicated
that birders are welcome to view the bird but should call 703-264-8860 after
3:00 pm on weekdays.

A WESTERN TANAGER* continues to visit a feeder in Williamsburg, VA with the
latest report on Feb 27.
 
A male PAINTED BUNTING is still being seen at a feeder in Bowie, Prince
Georges Co, MD with the latest report on Feb 27. The hosts request that
birders contact them by e-mail for directions and a viewing time (to ease
parking problems). Please see the MDOSPREY list server for more information.
A female PAINTED BUNTING visits a feeder on Rouse Dr in Virginia Beach, VA;
latest report is Feb 28. 

GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen in a number of locations this week
including Dublin Rd, Somerset Co, MD on Feb 27; Hunting Creek Rd, Caroline
Co, MD on Feb 28; near the Solomons Visitor Center, Calvert Co, MD on Feb
25; Turner Rd, Calvert Co, MD through Mar 1; near the Easton Airport, Talbot
Co, MD on Feb 27; and Willis Wharf, Northampton Co, VA on Feb 23. A ROSS'S
GOOSE was found in a flock of SNOW GEESE along Rt 309 in Queen Anne's Co, MD
on Mar 1.  

A male EURASIAN WIGEON was spotted Feb 25 and 26 on a pond on Pit Circle Rd,
Pocomoke City, MD. A male EURASIAN WIGEON was at Ramp Lane pond, Eastern
Shore of Virginia NWR on Feb 23. Another male EURASIAN WIGEON was in
Hampton, VA on Feb 24. EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL were seen on Feb 23 at the
Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR and Feb 27 in Fairmount WMA, Somerset Co, MD.
Some 3200 REDHEADS were seen at Crisfield, Somerset Co, MD on Feb 28. 
 
Up to 40 COMMON EIDERS and two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen at the Ocean City
inlet, Worcester Co, MD with the latest report on Feb 28. A female KING
EIDER was found farther off the inlet on Feb 28. A young male COMMON EIDER
was at Kiptopeke SP, Northampton Co, VA on Feb 23.

A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen at Point Lookout SP, St. Mary's Co, MD
on Feb 27.

An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was spotted flying over Hampton, VA on Feb 24. Two
BROWN PELICANS were seen from Bethel Beach, Mathews Co, VA on Feb 28.

A PEREGRINE FALCON continues to fly about Bailey's Crossroads, Falls Church,
VA. Another PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Anacostia Park, Washington, DC on
Feb 28.

A SANDHILL CRANE was found in a pasture at the NIH Animal Center, Elmer
School Rd, Montgomery Co, MD on Mar 1.

A LAUGHING GULL was spotted in Talbot Co, MD on Feb 28. An adult
BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen again near 28th Bay St in Norfolk, VA on February
24 and 27.

A RAZORBILL flew near the jetty at the Ocean City inlet on Feb 24.

A possible SNOWY OWL was reported from Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel Co, MD on
Feb 25. Four SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen at Deal Island WMA, Somerset Co, MD
on Feb 27.

A Selasphorus Hummingbird of unidentified species has been visiting a feeder
in Richmond, VA with sightings on February 23, 25, and 27.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE is again being seen behind the community building at
12608 Sedgewick Way, Hagerstown, Washington Co, MD with reports from Feb 24
and Mar 1.

TREE SWALLOWS have recognized Meteorological Spring; sightings were reported
from Augusta Co and Prince William Co, VA; Harford Co, MD and Delaware. 

AMERICAN TREE SPARROW reports slackened; spots included Patapsco Valley SP,
Howard Co, MD and Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, VA.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was found on Six Bridges Rd, Carroll Co, MD on Feb 23. A
SNOW BUNTING was seen throughout the week near the lighthouse at Pt. Lookout
SP, St. Mary's Co, MD. Another SNOW BUNTING was along Coulbourne Creek Rd,
Somerset Co, MD on Feb 27 and 28.
