I got a call from Jeff Shenot as I drove into work today. He saw the Greater White-fronted Goose at Schoolhouse Pond this morning around seven. The bird was with a large group (500+) of Canada Geese on the water, as it was two days ago. Unfortunately, I was running late today and didn't get a chance to see the geese until just after 8 am, and the geese were already departing in large noisy flocks and the Greater White-fronted Goose was nowhere to be seen.

It seems that large numbers of geese spend the night at the pond and are seen early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Typically they begin departing around 7:30 am or so as I do my usual morning walk. Sometimes when I begin walking in the morning there can be hundreds of geese when I start and most have left when I am done 20 or 30 minutes later. So, it was somewhat unusual that I had a large group of geese to look through at lunchtime on Tuesday, although it does happen from time to time. Probably early morning or late afternoon are the best times to check for this bird at the pond, although I will post if it turns up at lunchtime again.
