We have two wren boxes for our "dueling wrens" -- one pair at each end of
our large garden. One box faces west and one ESE and each is used every year
so for wrens at least, it may not make much difference. Hanging the box
where predators can't access it -- ours are off small branches far out from
the tree trunk -- and about head height seems to work.

We have two bluebird boxes that never get bluebirds but have Tufted Tits in
them each year. One faces west and one east.
