I saw 4 Eastern red bats in the clearing next to the pond at the start of Cash lake trail -- a short walk from the Patuxent Refuge visitor center at 3:15 pm today. There's a bench and a set of bleachers under tree debris for the outdoor education center. They skimmed the pond for bugs, flew above the trees and swooped low in an aerial ballet so fast you should just hold your binoculars still and in a minute one will fly by.

The most notable thing about that day was the number of Merlins, Green Darner dragonflies and Red Bats we encountered far offshore, making the water crossing from the southern shore of Long Island as they headed south down the coast. In fact, we saw several Merlins catching and snacking on darners, on the wing - fast food for migrant falcons, I guess!
