This may not seem like a "big deal" to most back yard birders
hereabouts, but the immature (probably female) Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker that turned up on one of our peanut feeders about 6:15 p.m.
this evening, and was still at the same feeder at 6:45, was the first
of this species we've seen in our small Bethesda rear yard for more
than SIX YEARS.
By golly, it's still here at 7:00 p.m. and eating ravenously.
That's what I love about this time of year -- the unexpected birds
that turn up. That and weather warm enough to fire up the hose pipe
so as to wash the rich, thick mud of Riley's Lock Rd. off the car!!
