Our first good flight of Broad-winged Hawks this season was observed at Cromwell Valley Park today, Friday 4/16/10.
From 9:30 AM until just after noon, the sky was painfully clear blue, making it almost impossible to pick out the high flying BWs. Only a dozen or so were seen until about 1:00 PM, when the winds shifted out of the WSW with gusts up to 29 mph, bringing in a nice mix of clouds. Careful scanning by a handful of observers, along with the clouds as a back ground, revealed hawks flying at extreme heights. The largest group of BWs totaled 81 birds.
