On a sudden impulse, decided to check out one of Steve Sanford's old
haunts and possibly bag a few warblers. Didn't happen. The closest I
could get was the Wheezy call of the Blue Gray Gnatcatcher. At one
point, I heard a snatch of something which I tried making into the LA
Waterthrush, but turned out to be an inquisitive RC Kinglet.
The best sighting of a very slow day was a Broad-winged Hawk passing
overhead. Total count: 21 spp., incl. RT & RS Hawks and both vultures.
Other nice sightings were numerous wildflowers, Golden Ragwort and
Rue-anemone the latest additions to other early bloomers. The large,
shelving Dryad's Saddle [Polyporus squamosus] was conspicuous
with its numerous fruitings--yeah, a mushroom.
