Birded the trail again this morning, had a little more time than usual
as my bicycle tire popped early on (take lemons and make lemonade,
right?). Some new birds compared to last week. I had hoped to find the
southern USDA field with some puddles after the rain this weekend, but
was quite disappointed. That spot is about the only hope on the trail
for shorebirds, other than a couple on occasion at the swamp (and
spotteds along the creek). Was hoping for snipe, yellowlegs,
solitaries, etc, but not a bird (or puddle) in the whole field. A
couple of spotted sandpipers at the golf-course pond softened the blow,
but only slightly. Also had a migrating Buteo, but it was pretty high
up and I couldn't get the ID.

Surprisingly missed some obvious birds (only had one woodpecker
species), but had a few good ones. A heard-only bobolink was a treat,
it's a rare bird on the trail, I find them only every other year or so.

Most of the notes will most likely only be of interest for those who are
familiar with the trail.

I bumped into Tom Ostrowski, and look forward to seeing the good birds
that I missed :)

Good Birding,

Location: Paint Branch Trail
Observation date: 4/27/10
Number of species: 41

Canada Goose 11
Mallard 3
Great Blue Heron 1 at swamp
Turkey Vulture 2
Red-shouldered Hawk 1 just south of swamp
Killdeer 2 golf course pond, no sign of babies, but there were crows harassing these two, so I'm worried.
Spotted Sandpiper-FOY 2 edge of golf course pond, 3rd peep in grass near pond, wasn't sure of ID
Mourning Dove 3
Chimney Swift 3
Red-bellied Woodpecker 2
Eastern Phoebe 2 one at swamp, one near second bridge
White-eyed Vireo 1 top stretch
WARBLING VIREO 1 swamp (HO). Didn't get a look today as did last week, but still heard it singing, nothing at the "warbling vireo tree" though.
Blue Jay 2
American Crow 1
Fish Crow 1
Barn Swallow 1 very top of trail, below cherry hill, probably nesting over "pond" at seven springs.
Carolina Chickadee 3
Tufted Titmouse 2
Carolina Wren 4
House Wren 2 one not far from cherry hill, other again at south end of swamp
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 9
American Robin 7
Gray Catbird-FOY 2 one a little before swamp (seen), one at swamp (ho)
Northern Mockingbird 1
European Starling 3
Northern Parula 1 2nd bridge
Yellow-rumped Warbler 3 probably many more, this is the number I saw, but they seemed to be all over
Common Yellowthroat-FOY 2 top stretch of the trail
Eastern Towhee-FOY 1 heard only, but heard both "tow-wee" and "drink-your-tee"
Swamp Sparrow-FOY 2 just shy of 1st bridge
White-throated Sparrow 6
Northern Cardinal 7
Indigo Bunting-FOY 1 just below "metzerott forest", the second year that my FOY was at this spot.
Bobolink-FOY 1 heard only, just a few steps past 1st bridge, somewhat distance, but heard part of the song twice. scanned for a while but couldn't see it
Red-winged Blackbird 2
Common Grackle 5
Brown-headed Cowbird 1
Orchard Oriole-FOY 1 There may have been a second, but I can only claim the one that I saw, which then flew in the direction I was headed, so the other might've been the same bird.
American Goldfinch 5
House Sparrow 1 on the trail itself just below metzerott forest.
