Hi all

This morning I walked the trail In Robert E. Lee Park (Lake Roland) from the Falls Road parking lot to the high speed light rail tracks (where the City of Baltimore has closed the Park to public access). Near to the far end of the trail I saw, heard, and photographed a Summer Tanager. When I checked I was surprised to find that this was a State bird for me.

Other interesting notes included hearing a warbler sing high in the canopy - its loud song reminded me of a Louisiana Waterthrush, but what would a Waterthrush be doing up so high? For that matter, what would a Waterthrush be doing just sitting in on one place for so long (longer than 5 minutes!) that I stared and stared but never found the bird. I got a second chance farther down the trail, with the same loud call, high in the canopy, seemingly remaining stationary. I was racking my brain to come up with a logical ID to fit the call and the behavior, and then the bird finally moved. I followed it. What do you know? It was a Louisiana Waterthrush. What was a Waterthrush doing up so high sitting in the canopy? Singing.

Great looks, also at a Barred Owl - just got one snap before it flew off.

Warblers included:

Northern
 Parula – 5

Yellow Warbler – 9

Yellow-rumped
Warbler – 1

Black-and-white Warbler – 1

American Redstart
– 3

Ovenbird – 1

Northern
 Waterthrush – 2

Louisiana Waterthrush – 2

Common
Yellowthroat - 9

Not to mention the large handful of times I heard an interesting warbler call just at the edge of my hearing, tantalizing in its possibilities, but not repeated for a better chance of an ID... Ah well...
