Hi all,
At lunch, I took a walk along the promenade toward the eastern end of
the Inner Harbor (near the US Coast Guard Taney vessel). Between
McCormick and Schmick's restaurant and the water is a small patch of
grass surrounded by black locust trees. I usually see a few birds
here, but mostly House Sparrows, House Finches, and starlings.
However, today I heard some familiar buzzing. I took a closer look
and found a flock of warblers feeding in the locusts. Since the trees
are fairly short, I was able to get some good looks without bins.
Only a few birds were singing, but I picked out Yellow, Blackpoll,
American Redstart, and Common Yellowthroat. I think there was also a
Blue-headed Vireo in the mix, too, but it wasn't singing, and I
couldn't get a good enough look without bins. Also present were Gray
Catbird, American Robin, and a House Finch feeding its young. Best
looks were of a few redstarts at eye level, only a couple of yards
away. I followed the flock around the ring of trees until my neck
hurt and then reluctantly returned to my windowless office.
Apparently I need to start bringing my bins to work!
Good birding,
Sean Stewart
