Jeff Shenot found a singing Mourning Warbler at Schoolhouse Pond this morning. The bird was singing and calling in the tangles just off the boardwalk. Looking from the road, the bird was along the boardwalk on the left side of the pond just before the boardwalk ends in the woods. This is the area of the boardwalk near the residential townhouses. However, the bird was on the pond side of the boardwalk, not the townhouse side. Jeff got close views of the bird as it sang and called, within 20 or 30 feet. He called me on my cell phone (I was at the rear platform at the time) and I rushed over. We continued to hear the bird call and saw the bird pop once more into view near the top of some tangles, allowing some fleeting views as the bird moved furtively among the tangles.

The Alder Flycatcher was not seen or heard on the other side of the pond or elsewhere this morning. Other warblers were numerous and Jeff tallied a total of 12 or so Blackpolls, 6 or so Yellow Warblers, and an incredible 6 Northern Waterthrush. Great find Jeff, and thanks for the call!
