I went to Fran Uhler after dinner today, hoping to hear the Whips reported several days ago. I birded along the railroad tracks and than in the woods near the river. The birding was fairly slow in the off and on rain. Birds included Eastern Kingbird, Acadian Flycatcher, Indigo Buntings, Chipping Sparrows, Red-eyed Vireo, Common Yellowthroat, and Yellow-throated Vireo. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo called once. As it began to get dark, I sat down and listened for the Whips. At 8:40 they began to sing. I listened to them for about 10 minutes. As I began to walk out, I heard the "peent" of an American Woodcock. It was in the grassy area under the utility wires. About a minute later, I saw the woodcock flutter overhead on whirring wingbeats.
