Hi Everyone,

Hope you had a nice weekend. Here are some highlights from a day of birding the upper Eastern Shore with Jim Brighton, John Hubbell, and Matt Tillett. Matt and I parted ways with Jim and John at the perfect moment to miss the Sandhill Cranes - we should have headed back into Kent one stop later!

Cattle Egret - 2 at Chesapeake Farms, 3 on Colonel Leonard Road, Kent Co.
Sandhill Crane - 0. Missed it by minutes and tried three times (morning, early afternoon, and late afternoon). Danny Poet had them around noon on 6/19.
American Kestrel - One along Bakers Lane, Kent Co.
Least Tern - No fewer than 16 at the colony at Rose's in Chestertown (probably more), two at Quaker's
Neck Landing (Kent), one at the small pond on Route 213 south of
Hatchett Point Road (QA).
Chuck-will's-widow - Two heard on Tilghman Neck Road, Queen Anne's Co. (QA). (night of 6/18)
Whip-poor-will - None, alas, despite extensive listening in Millington.
Black-billed Cuckoo - Great looks at one on Chino Farms found by Dan Small (photos). Enjoyed watching it catching caterpillars. Great find, Dan - thanks!
Warbling Vireo - One singing south and east of St. Paul's Millpond (Kent), two singing on Langford Road near Brice's Mill Road (Kent), and one on the Queen Anne's side of Tuckahoe Lake. My overdue first nesting WAVIs on the Eastern Shore. Spent most of the late afternoon trying to track one down on the Caroline side of Tuckahoe.
Marsh Wren - Two singing along Island Creek Road (QA). Thanks to Jim Brighton for the latest intel, and to Stasz and Hafner for sharing this site a long time ago.
Summer Tanager - One singing along Quaker Neck Landing Road (Kent).

Favorite non-avian was a Stinkpot (Musk Turtle) - only my third in the state, and my first on the Eastern Shore - in Queen Anne's Co.
