Hi everyone,

Today was one of our field days out to Poplar Island. We ran into
Jan Reese, so, he'll have a more complete list with the surveys that
he does as compared to the tern, heron/egret & osprey monitoring that
we do.  I'll mention just a few of the highlights here.  Oh, and, shorebirds are trickling in.

Surf Scoter  10, with 8 [4 males & 4 females] off western part of the island; 1 pr. off northeast corner the of island.  I have seen 5-8 birds here on each visit all summer long, as well as most other summers too.

Black-necked Stilt  - 3 adults & 3 almost fledged young. We think there might have been 3 or 4 different nests this year!

AMERICAN AVOCET  - 20!  The highest number I've ever seen on the island!

Killdeer  - estimate ~25

Short-billed Dowitcher  - estimate ~35

Semipalmated Sandpiper  - estimate ~30

Least Sandpiper  - estimate ~200

Lesser Yellowlegs  - estimate ~40 of the ones I could check.

Spotted Sandpiper  counted 5, but most likely several more.

Least Tern  - estimated ~170

Common Tern - estimated ~400

BLACK TERN  - 1 in full breeding plumage.
