I think it is, at least with lone birds. Several years ago, my wife and I went to visit my mom in her nursing home in Florida, in winter (just north of Orlando). We were staying at her home with my sister, and several times while driving into and out of her development, we watched an adult Sandhill Crane with 2 chicks, feeding right beside the road. They were oblivious to our presence, even when we drove up to take photos (right beside the car practically). As long as we stayed in the car, they seemed very tame. The development has erected signs to beware of the cranes so they don't get hit. They would also occasionally show up in the yard as well (nice yard bird!).

I went to see the crane. There was a birder/photographer stalking it. I
ulled up closer to the bird in my auto (staying on the road) and shut
ff the ignition. It immediately walked over to within 50 ft of the
uto and seemed to wait for something and then wandered off.
Is this tame nature usual?
Parke.
