Good morning all,
Walking around the yard alone (simply too hot for Peanut!) I once again heard the Grasshopper Sparrow singing and this time I was determined to try and see it. Without my hearing aid in, this proved difficult. While I could hear it singing (at least part of its song) I couldn't pinpoint the exact location. I moved back and forth on my side of the fence until I had it "centered" in my auditory field. It took a really long time but I finally spied him perched up in a small cherry tree, maybe 10 feet off the ground, and adjacent to the field. Not great looks as he was in bad light, but I did finally get a look without drawing him in with tapes. Also saw and heard the male Indigo Bunting, singing and flying back and forth across the treetops, and had what must've been a family of Great-crested Flycatchers, one without a tail (looking like an ant pitta). Also, E. Kingbirds seen and heard (3 flying around chasing one another), 3 Cedar Waxwings, Carolina Wren, A. Robin, many E. Bluebirds, a heard only Yellow-billed Cuckoo from across the woods, Barn Swallows, Blue Jays, goldfinches and House Finches. And hummers at the feeders.
Filled up all the feeders, and cleaned and filled the bird fountain. Yesterday around dinner time we had 7 A. Crows at the fountain (hogging it Alli said) drinking and playing around the water. In this heat I clean and refill it every day, as algae is quick to grow, and the water gets warm quickly too. Gotta keep them cool too!
Stay cool,
Rick Sussman
