I came out early to Hughes Hollow (Montgomery Co) to try for better
looks at the Little Blue Herons. Much to my surprise and delight I
immediately found 7 Little Blue Herons and 2 Great Egrets perched at the top
of the trees on the island in the large impoundment. Soon more birds came
in and the perched birds flew down to forage among the vegetation. It wasn't
long before many of the birds flew away. My final count was 9 LITTLE BLUE
HERONS (all immatures) and 7 GREAT EGRETS. I also had 5 Great Blue Herons
and 7 Green Herons.
Many times when I came out for my site surveys the Great Egrets aren't
here until I return from my counts so it was a real pleasure to see them as
soon as I arrived.
On the rest of my walk I has 6 Great Blue Herons and one Great Egret
along the river and an immature Black-crowned Night Heron at a mitigation
pond.
When I left about 10 am I could only see 4 little blues.
