The Talbot Bird Club, led by Jan Reese, made the first of its
annual August visits to Black Walnut Point and surrounding regions on
Sunday, August 1. Cool and beautiful weather greeted the birders, and nice
birds were present in good numbers also. Highlights were good views of
Yellow Warblers (at least four birds) and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (also four
birds). At least three Brown Pelicans were perched on one of the pound net
arrays, along with dozens of DC Cormorants and scores of Osprey.

Fly overs included Caspian Terns, many Purple Martins, Barn
Swallows and Tree Swallows, and a few Chimney Swifts. Singing species
included Blue Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings and Carolina Wrens. Several
Yellow-billed Cuckoos were calling late in the morning.

Jan has promised to be birding Black Walnut Point each Sunday
morning through August. At 7:00 a.m. the interested birders convene at the
St Michaels Village Shopping Center beside Rte 33 on the east side of St
Michaels to car pool. "Sleeper in-ers" can still show up at the Point by
just driving on down. The birding group will be in that region, and they
are usually not too hard to find.
