While checking out the garden early this morning, I glanced up to watch
the Pewee sing in the snag. The one was joined by another and then another
and then another. That made it four - a new family out for a fly? In the
early afternoon, I went into my small barn to get out the lawn tractor.
Fluttering and panting in the rafters was a Pewee. I spent about 10 minutes
trying to carefully guide it out of the 7x10 foot door, but it refused to
fly lower. I went back to the house and got my butterfly net and a broom.
The bird was perched on a beam. I raised the net to one side and then used
the broom to gently push it off the beam into the net. I was able to easily
reach in and pick it out. It perched on my hand for about 5 minutes. I
dripped some water off of my finger onto its bill and then it readily lapped
up 4 or 5 good drops. The inside of its mouth was yellow so I assume it was
fairly recently fledged, but I can't be sure since I have never looked into
the mouth of an adult Pewee. After another minute or so it flew off.
During my morning walk, 3 adult turkeys and 12 youngsters crossed the
road in front of me and started crossing a hay field. The youngster heads
were bobbing just above the height of the grass. Being curious, I started
pishing which immediately sent the birds flying. Don't know if the pishing
or just my presence caused them to fly.
This evening, a female Redstart made an appearance at my bird bath.
And finally, the Blue Grosbeaks are working on their second family of
the season ... four newly hatched babies. There would have been five but I
took out the Cowbird egg. It was the 2nd egg to appear in this nest.
