Recently, every time I visit Hughes Hollow (McKee-Beshers WMA in
Montgomery Co) the number of Great Egrets increases and now I am finding
record numbers. Today (8-05) I had 71, on 8-02, 61, 7-30 , 32 and on 7-27,
12. They are mainly in two large open areas of water SW of the island in
the large impoundment. It is so crowded they are almost standing shoulder
to shoulder. To see these large numbers you have to be there early in the
morning. I am seeing them around sunrise as a start my site survey count
along Hunting Quarter Rd.. By the time I return about 3 hours later numbers
have greatly diminished- 2 on 7-27, 13 on 7-30, 17 on 8-02 and 14 today.
The immature Little Blue Herons are still here, but their numbers
are fairly constant between my first visit and when I return- 7-27-7&7,
7-30-1&3, 8-02-7&6 and 8-05-6&5.
There are two reports of Snowy Egrets in E-bird one of 4 birds on 8-5
which I doubt and 2 on 8-03 which I am skeptical of.
Just for spice I have also been seeing an immature Yellow-crowned Night
Heron.
