After reading Bill Hubick and Leslie Starr's posts about Smith Island, I
knew I needed to pay my first visit there so Jeff Culler and I went today.
We had strong winds all day with waves splashing over the jetties at Point
Lookout and we didn't find any migrants but had a very nice trip. My
highlights were Red-headed Woodpeckers at Point Lookout (just north of the
fort as Bill described, but we had 2 adults and 1 juvenile), 2 Peregrine
Falcons at the Target Ship, and on Smith Island - Tricolored Heron,
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, American Oystercatcher, Clapper Rail, Virginia
Rail, Saltmarsh Sparrow, and Seaside Sparrow.
We didn't get any pelagic birds but I kept expecting Sooty and Bridled Terns
to fly by. Maybe the next time. Until then I hope to get my pelagic fix this
Sunday on the trip out of Lewes, DE.
