Come celebrate the dedication of Mattawoman Creek and surrounding
forestlands as an Important Bird Area! The ceremony will be this
Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 1:30pm at Mattingly Park in Indian Head,
Maryland. Greg Butcher, National Audubon's Director of Bird
Conservation, will speak at the ceremony, and Audubon will recognize
the excellent land management of Mattawoman Natural Environment Area
and Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area by the Maryland Department
of Natural Resources and the outstanding efforts of the Mattawoman
Watershed Society and the Southern Maryland Audubon Society to promote
habitat and wildlife conservation within this Important Bird Area. The
IBA ceremony will be part of the Mattawoman Creek Lotus Blossom
Festival organized and sponsored by the Smarter Growth Alliance for
Charles County, of which Audubon Maryland-DC is a member. The Lotus
Blossom Festival will feature free boat rides to see the lotus
blossoms, canoe and kayak rentals from Up the Creek Rentals, face
painting and fish printing, plus folk music by Grace Griffith and Lynn
Hollyfield.
