While finishing dinner on our deck I heard some CHICKADEES and
TITMICE chattering as they came through and decided to see if there
were any hangers-on. I'm glad I did. First a BLACK AND WHITE
WARBLER made an appearance, and then a striking male AMERICAN
REDSTART. A fall immature female CHESTNUT-SIDED was next. I believe
that the fourth was a first winter female MAGNOLIA, but its pale gray
neckband was faint, not nearly as sharp as Sibley shows. A female
CANADA put in an appearance, and then finally a faded BLACK-THROATED
GREEN. I had pretty good looks at all of them before they moved on,
and then they decided to put in a second appearance, with more great
looks - at one point I almost hit the close-focusing limit of my
binoculars when looking at the black-throated green.
To top it all off, two NIGHTHAWKS flew over, and I saw another two on
a walk later. Oddly, they were all headed in a northerly direction.
