I had quite a surprise this morning when I sat on the deck in our small Bethesda back yard hoping to see some migrants come through. I saw a small bird moving up in the neighbor's tree, focused the binoculars on it, and was surprised to see a Red-breasted Nuthatch. We've only had them in our yard a couple of times in 30 years of observing and those were in winter months. There must be a lot of them coming into the mid-Atlantic now given the number of reports. Turned out to be a nice warbler day too with 6 species so far.
