The Cromwell Valley Park HawkWatch crew recorded 3,194 Broadwinged Hawks today, surpassing their record of only a few days ago. With winds out of the north and beautiful clouds scattered across the sky throughout the day, they were able to spot many of the hawks at high altitude. One large kettle of 495 birds was seen in the 12 o'clock hour, and the largest group was seen between 5:45 PM and 6:00 PM. This late day group numbered 554 hawks which streamed over the BGE line hill and spread out widely all across the valley as they slowly lost altitude to seek roosting areas for the night. We expect to see at least some of these birds, if not many, rise from their roosts tomorrow (Saturday) morning. Thanks to Brad Cernohosky, Andy Smith, Mark Scarff and all those who assisted with the count!! See you all on Saturday!
