It was just pointed out to me that Bohemian Waxwing is a very rare
bird, even in Garrett. I knew it was rare everywhere else in the
state, but I thought it was a perfectly reasonable bird to encounter
on a mountaintop in Garrett County in the early fall. I am sure of
the sighting because I got a good look, it was mixed with a small
flock of Cedar Waxwings which provided comparison, and I'm familiar
with the bird from seeing it on multiple occasions in northeastern
Minnesota at this time of year. However I can't prove the sighting
because my photos didn't turn out. And I didn't call anyone to
confirm because I didn't know it was a rarity. So given that (a) it
has been nearly two days now, (b) there was no confirmation by a
more experienced birder, and (c) there is no photographic or other
proof, I wouldn't recommend running over to Carey Run on my say-so.
It would likely be a waste of time. Again, I apologize for not
realizing this was a rarity and taking appropriate action.
