Thanks to all who have got back to me on the sparrow id. While a couple of
people thought it looked good for Le Conte's, three people have now suggested a
bright juvenile Savannah Sparrow. While the bird looked much smaller (the power
of suggestion?) and was much yellower than any Savannah I've seen, I can see
merit in the Savannah conclusion. I expressed concern about the strong face
markings and bill size when I emailed it around a few people yesterday.
There have been several Savannah Sparrows at the same pond throughout the Fall.
So I'll certainly not be claiming it as a Le Conte's based on my brief view and
lousy photos - would be a life bird for me for one thing. I looked for it again
this morning, no luck. 6 Purple Finches, 2 Common Ravens and many sparrows (3
Lincoln's) and about a dozen Yellow-rumped Warblers.
Thanks again for you feedback.
