Hi all,
Mike Bowen's post from yesterday spurred me to go there after physical therapy in Olney this morning. I didn't arrive till about noon, but it was still pretty active. My very first sparrow was an immature White-crowned, which hopped up into one of the small trees lining the gravel entrance road. I also saw 2 Lincoln's Sparrows, a single Swamp Sparrow, many White-throats and Songs, a few Field Sparrows, about 4-5 more White-crowns (all imms), several Juncos, and towhees. I also had what I initially thought was a bright Blackpoll Warbler, then decided on Orange-crowned Warbler (based on dates, in my head.) I didn't have a field guide with me but tried to remember the field marks till I got home, where I was able to turn it back into a bright Blackpoll Warbler, based on the bright wing-bars. Anyway, Orange-crowned would've been a new bird for my Blue Mash list, but it was only a late Blackpoll (albeit a very bright yellow one).
Also had a Blue-headed Vireo, a male brownie Purple Finch, Barred Owl, RS Hawk, lots of RC Kinglets and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Cedar Waxwings and Robins, A. Black and Mallard Ducks, several Ruddy Ducks, Killdeer, Carolina Wren (no House), Mockingbirds, and several other species, with 36 in my less than 2 hour walk. Always a great place to hike in October.
