An adult Golden Eagle was observed at the Cromwell Valley Park Hawkwatch today, Sunday Oct. 24th. Even at a great distance, when this bird was first spotted, there was something unusual about it. " Looks like a Vulture, but....". hmmm "Could be an Eagle....we'll keep an eye on it and see if he comes our way." It took several minutes to approach, and a couple of Sharpies and a Redshoulder passed by meantime. " Here comes our possible Eagle!" All eyes were on this bird now, and immediately the conversation became intense. "You know what that looks like...? Do you guys ever get Goldens here?...Don't see any clear markings... just a large dark bird..." This Eagle was in view for several minutes, and as it neared the radio tower it made 2 or 3 slow circles before moving off. Everyone noted the small head (compared to Bald Eagles), and several observers (with better optics than mine) could make out some lighter color under the wings and tail. This Golden Eagle was a life bird for one of our newer observers, Joe Stag, and it made his day!
