I went to Hains Pt. & Anacostia Park this (Sat., 11/6) morning. A
beautiful morning with a fair amount of activity, but nothing amazing.
Best birds were a 1st cycle BONAPARTE'S GULL and 16 FORSTER'S TERNS at
the mouth of the Anacostia. There was a lot of gull/cormorant/tern
activity in this area and they seemed to be feeding well (probably about
80 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS). At a couple of spots I totaled 8
BUFFLEHEADS, which were the first for the season for me. Still a large
number (several hundred) of LAUGHING GULLS flying up the Anacostia -
almost all adults. A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was along the Maintenance
Road at Hains, and 8 AMERICAN PIPITS flew over my head as I was walking
back to my car from the point, while a single bird flew over in
Anacostia Park. A late GREAT EGRET was feeding along the Anacostia at
the new park near the Nats stadium.

And I've been reading with great interest these Black-capped Chickadee
sightings that keep getting closer and closer to the District. This
species is extremely unusual in the District anymore, so any sightings
would be noteworthy. If you find one in the District this season,
please make sure you get the word out.

Good birding,
Paul Pisano
