Apologies for the late report which I almost forgot to do. Here are my
personal highlights from the rarity roundup and surrounding days.
On Friday, Nov. 12 Debbie Terry and I stopped at Deal Island WMA late in
the day to see if any herons would be coming to roost. There seemed to be
lots of duck hunters around getting ready for the start of the season. There
was a Snow Bunting at the end of Riley Roberts Road in the parking lot and
on the dike. Herons were few with only two Tricoloreds and perhaps 6 Great
Egrets coming in. Black-crowned Night-Herons leaving their roost numbered
72. Earlier at the big pond on Messick Road which leads to the boat ramp on
Dames Quarter Creek we were surprised to find 27 Blue-winged Teal and 6
Shovelers and four species of shorebirds: 4 Killdeer, 1 Greater Yellowlegs,
3 Least Sandpipers, and 3 Dunlin.
On both Saturday and Sunday at Ocean City Inlet we saw the flock of about
20 Common Eiders which included two adult males, second- and first-year
males, and females, an adult Harlequin Duck, and one Purple Sandpiper. As
usual the ducks stayed behind the south jetty most of the time. The
sandpiper was on the north jetty. Late in the day on Saturday a flock of
about 38 Black Skimmers appeared for a few minutes at the inlet and a
Pomarine Jaeger flew south past the inlet. Perhaps our rarest bird on
Saturday was a White-breasted Nuthatch at a feeder in North Ocean City. On
Sunday I heard a Clapper Rail, which we missed on Saturday, in the marsh
behind the 94th Street woods.
