Successful capture and band this morning confirmed the bird as a HY
female rufous, mid-molt. Good fat reserves and otherwise in fine health.
Understandably a little skittish but back at the feeders again.
Repeat of directions:
The bird is most easily viewed from the back patio of 4602 Drexel Road
( my home ); it feeds from the easily visible feeder in my backyard
and the one in the adjacent back yard, also visible. Perversely it
prefers the other feeder.
Viewings are every half hour or so, and it is often heard before it is
seen. It regularly basks in the (now bare) small gum to the left of
the chairs and forages in the pin oak in the far left corner of the
yard It also feeds occasionally and forages for insects on the ragged
remains of the pink kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate in the middle
vegetable bed.
You are welcome to use the chairs (and the rain shelter if it's up).
The easiest way to reach the neighborhood is to come south from the
Beltway College Park exit, past the campus and associated strip mall.
Turn left onto Guilford opposite the Exxon station, right onto Wake
Forest Drive (road sign may be missing; an occupational hazard of life
in a college town) at the first stop sign, and left in two blocks
where Drexel is a T junction with Wake Forest. 4602 is the second
house on the left with the long paved driveway. Walk down the drive
toward the peeling hulk of the garage and into the gate on your left.
No need to check in or announce your visit but please remain on the
patio during your visit. And please sign the log and note whether you
have seen the critter.
Parking is abundant and unrestricted on weekends and for 2 hours at a
time weekdays. Please email directly for more info.
Location is also accessible by Metro (about 7 blocks from College Park
Metro west entrance).
