Naturalist Society. This report was completed at 8:30 AM, Tuesday,
December 21.

Top bird this week is GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, EARED GREBE, golden eagle,
SANDERLING, DUNLIN, gulls, WHITE-WINGED DOVE*, SHORT-EARED OWL,
hummingbirds, WESTERN KINGBIRD, COMMON RAVEN, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE,
SEDGE WREN, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE*, warblers, PAINTED BUNTING,
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, and evening grosbeak.

The Christmas Bird Count is underway and reports of rarities are
coming in. Leading the list is the first winter GOLDEN-CROWNED
SPARROW* found on the Lower Kent Co, MD CBC on Dec 19 at Chesapeake
Farms and seen again on Dec 20 and 21. The Farms are located between
Chestertown and Rock Hall; they are privately managed for wildlife and
hunting. Birders MUST remain in their vehicle while on the Farm. The
bird was foraging with other sparrows on the entrance road to the
headquarters off Ricauds Branch Rd.

An adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen at Cranberry Reservoir,
Carroll Co, MD on Dec 14, 15, and 16. A ROSS'S GOOSE was found on
Taylor's Island, Dorchester Co, MD on Dec 18. CACKLING GEESE were
spotted at Big Pool, Washington Co, MD on Dec 15, on the Potomac River
in Washington DC on Dec 16, at Roaches Run, Arlington Co, VA on Dec
18, and on the Jug Bay CBC in Prince Georges Co, MD on Dec 19.

A female HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen from Island 1 of the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge Tunnel, Northampton Co, VA on Dec 17. A male and a female
HARLEQUIN DUCK were in the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on Dec
20.

An EARED GREBE was on the lake at Black Hill Regional Park, Montgomery
Co, MD on Dec 18 through 20. The bird was seen from the parking area
near the Rt 121 bridge.

An adult GOLDEN EAGLE was observed on Leitches Wharf Rd, Calvert Co,
MD on Dec 17.

A DUNLIN was found at Hunting Creek, Fairfax Co, VA on Dec 18. A
SANDERLING was seen at Fort Armistead Park in Baltimore on Dec 18.

With the approach of winter, sightings of unusual gulls are
increasing. A BLACK-HEADED GULL was at Paper Mill Flats, Baltimore Co,
MD on Dec 18 and 19. A probable second year CALIFORNIA GULL* was found
at Depot Pond, Upper Marlboro, Prince Georges Co, MD on Dec 20. A
first year ICELAND GULL was in North East Town Park, Cecil Co, MD on
Dec 17 joined by an adult and 2 first cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS;
an ICELAND/THAYER'S type was there on Dec 18. A first winter ICELAND
GULL was on Schoolhouse Pond in Upper Marlboro on Dec 20 along with an
adult and a second winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. A GLAUCOUS GULL
was at North East on Dec 18 and 20. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at
Hunting Creek on Dec 18. 

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE* was in a backyard near Lewes, DE on Dec 20 and
21.

Four SHORT-EARED OWLS hunted over the closed Oaks landfill in
Montgomery Co, MD on Dec 18. A SHORT-EARED OWL near  Allen's Fresh on
Dec 19 was very unusual for Charles Co, MD.

The Allen's hummingbird in Chester, Chesterfield Co, VA, was seen on
Dec 15, 17, and 21. A female Selasphorus hummingbird was coming to a
feeder in Silver Spring, Montgomery Co, MD on Dec 19 and 20.

A possible WESTERN KINGBIRD flew over Interstate 95 in Harford Co, MD
on Dec 16.

A COMMON RAVEN was found on Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, VA on
Dec 18. Several RAVENS were spotted on the Seneca CBC on Dec 19. 

Black-capped chickadees were spotted in Loudoun Co, VA on Dec 15,
Prince Georges Co, MD on Dec 19, and on the Blue Mash Trail in
Montgomery Co, MD on Dec 18. 

A SEDGE WREN was seen on the Jug Bay CBC  at Fishing Creek, Prince
Georges Co, MD on Dec 19.

A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE* was found on The Plains CBC near the
intersection of Trapp Branch Rd and VA Rt 55 in Fauquier Co, VA on Dec
19.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a male PRAIRIE WARBLER were seen on the
Washington DC CBC in Anacostia Park on Dec 18. Another two
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were found on that Count in the National
Arboretum. A CAPE MAY WARBLER was spotted in Calvert Co, MD on Dec 14.
The Ovenbird at Schoolhouse Pond was seen on Dec 14.

A male PAINTED BUNTING enlivened a feeder in Calvert Co on Dec 15.

Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen on Taylor's Island, Dorchester
Co, MD on Dec 18.

An evening grosbeak visited a back yard in Salisbury, Wicomico Co, MD
on Dec 16.
