Posted for Marie Ponzillo, Cockeysville:
Marie noticed a Red-tailed Hawk sitting in a neighbor's tree for several
hours. She didn't think anything of it until she had occasion to walk down to
her 10' heated pond. There, with his left foot caught in a net covering
the surface of the water to keep raccoons from eating the fish, was a second
hawk.
Marie ran back to the house and began searching for help. She was unable
to locate any at-home birders but finally managed to find the Phoenix
Wildlife Center's phone number (410 628 9736).
Lynn Taylor answered the phone and assured her someone would be there soon
as possible. A volunteer (didn't catch her name) walked into the office at
that moment and Lynn immediately sent her on her way.
The leg was seriously entangled in the net and it took some maneuvering to
extract the foot. The bird spent the next two days at the Center while the
swollen foot gradually returned to normal. The bird was returned to
Marie's backyard in Cockeysville and successfully released.
