Stan Arnold had reported 14 Purple Sandpipers at Herrington Harbor on eBird and
probably on MDOsprey (can't remember). I've missed PUSA in Anne Arundel at a
couple of the reported sites so thought I'd give it a shot before the end of the
year. I had walked out most of the way onto the north jetty without seeing
anything then the flock flushed from the south jetty. I froze and watched them
wheeling around thinking "that looks like more than 14 birds!" I squeezed off a
couple of frames which got one halfway decent capture of the flock, at least
enough resolution to count them with some enlargement. Here's a link if you're

Yesterday, Zach Baer and birded some areas around Jug Bay and Herrington
Harbor. It was a rather slow day, but at Herrington Harbor we saw 21 Purple
Sandpipers! This is new record count for the Western Shore of Maryland. I see
from eBird that Tyler Bell saw them as well. Good birding, Matt Hafner Forest
