Hi all --
Barry and I went scouting for the Sugarloaf CBC Sunday -- my area is
Sector 6 which includes Lilypons Water Gardens, the Bishop Claggett Ctr.
and some other nice areas. The bad news was that scrutiny of Oland
Road and Rt. 85 fond NO Horned Larks, much less any other field birds.
That doesn't mean they are absent, just not where we hoped they'd be.
We did a lot better on land birds. Highlights included:
WILSON'S SNIPE - 2 flushed at Lilypons
BLACK -CAPPED CHICKADEE (6 in total) at both Claggett Ctr. and
Lilypons. At Lilypons they were with Carolinas (about 25 of these seen)
and feeding voraciously on the seed heads of cattails. Nice contrast of
both species, especially close up and below eye level!
MARSH WREN -- one at Lilypons -- less cooperative, only scolding flight
views!
PALM WARBLER (Yellow) -- A real surprise, at Claggett Center.
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW -- small party of 5 at Lilypons, walking on
the ice of one of the impoundments!
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW - about 15 at Claggett and 3-4 at Lilypons
SAVANNAH SPARROW - one flushed from grass near house at Lilypons
We didn't do all of Lilypons, just a quick overview of some known good
areas. Very large numbers of Swamp Saprrows, a few Fields, plus the
expected Song and White-throats. Couple of Towhees.
Fair number of buteos about (Red-tails and Red-shoulers) but no
Harriers, Eagles or Accipiters.
Note; The Claggett Center is private and although they generally welcome
birders, prior arrangement should be made and one must also check in
at office when you arrive.
