Bob Augustine, who is an excellent birder, spent several hours at Black
Hills reservoir yesterday. He said there were many ducks of many species.
Of special interest, he saw three female Goldeneye and two males. He said he
had long and good looks at the two males in the same scope view. Both of
the birds had the correct head shape and round facial patch as expected on
Common Goldeneye. One of the males also had the expected green plumage on
the head. However the other male had Purple head plumage, such as one would
expect on a Barrows Goldeneye. Has anyone else seen this bird.? Bob and I
were discussing the possibility of the bird being a hybrid or even some sort
of back cross. We came to no final conclusion. I hope to get over to look
for it for myself in a day or so.
