Subject: [MDOSPREY] DC birds, January 1
25 people on the Montgomery Bird Club "Earliest Bird" field trip
enjoyed a reasonably balmy morning in the District of Columbia this morning.
Best birds were:
1st cycle GLAUCOUS GULL on the ice opposite the entrance to the Hains
Point golf club. (We were unaware that other birders had earlier seen
this gull until running into Ottavio Janni a while later)
MERLIN perched on the Washington Channel side of Hains Point.
A male PINE WARBLER in the trees at the upper parking lot (near the
construction trailers) at the LBJ Grove. (Where we also had a BROWN
CREEPER and several GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS.)
11 CANVASBACK, 16 RING-NECKED DUCK and 3 HOODED MERGANSER at
Georgetown Reservoir.
Same as others, we utterly failed to find any chickadees at the spot
where I had a Black-Capped Chickadee yesterday. We also dipped on
the Peregrine Falcon that was perched on the 14th St. railroad bridge
yesterday morning, and the 2 seen by Paul Pisano earlier on Saturday
morning. But the Glaucous Gull made up for it!
