With Rob's photos posted and finally having some time to look at them. I feel much more confident in identifying the Pickering Creek bird as a Loggerhead Shrike. I've feel the overall shape of its "cute" rounded head, small and broad-based bill, dark gray back, very thin and indistinct white line over the eye (not always noticeable), shape of the black mask, and white throat contrasting with a gray chest safely confirm the bird as a Loggerhead.
If anyone else disagrees or had different impressions in the field, please feel free to comment and start a discussion. I think there's a lot to be learned here.
Good birding,
