There was at least one, and maybe two, Orange-crowned Warblers at
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, DC, at around 11:00 a.m. this morning,
1/9. The bird(s) were seen in the immediate vicinity of the first
(2-level) overlook platform off to the left of the marsh boardwalk
trail. One was working the tops of cat-tails in the marsh, while the
other (if indeed a different bird) came in to a small tree with
chickadees to check out my screech-owl whistle.
The reason I believe there could have been two birds is that the one
in the marsh had visible but diffuse streaking on the breast and
sides, while the one with the chickadees had very little streaking.
Otherwise, the birds were plumaged alike -- grey head contrasting
with grey-green back, indistinct eye ring and dark eyeline, and quite
bright greenish-yellow breast and belly (brighter in color than I
normally associate with race lutescens, which is the usual race here
in the winter). Perhaps the difference in streaking was just a trick
of the light, so possibly there was just one bird.
In any event, this was my 7th Orange-Crowned Warbler record for DC
and the first since this exact same date in 2010 (that bird was in
Anacostia Park).
