Yesterday afternoon I was working at home and keeping an eye on the activity
by the bird feeder. I didn't see anything happen, but all of a sudden there
was a male cardinal lying on the ground, feet up. I went out to move it away
from the feeder, but I couldn't see a mark on it. It looked fine--just
happened to be dead. I don't think a hawk had been in the yard, because when
the birds panic it's very obvious, and the rest of the birds are fine. Seems
really strange.
More happily, today I saw a flock of ten robins flying over Rt. 40 by the
Rite Aid in Elkton. Closer to home, I saw a pileated woodpecker fly across
Middle Road.
